peritonitis

Inflammation of the peritoneum (the serous membrane in the lining of the abdomen). It results from bacterial infection within the abdomen, caused by perforation of the stomach or intestine. It causes severe pain, muscle spasms, fever, vomiting, and sometimes shock.
