My one serious quibble with this chapter is the rather egregious omission of Baltasar Gracian's Agudeza y arte del ingenio (1648), arguably the Bible for a Spanish baroque literary movement called Conceptism and an important source for understanding contemporaneous notions of encoding and decoding (to cite Stuart Hall).
