Effect of bacterial inoculations on growth parameters including germination percentage, shoot length, root, number of leaves flower diameter, number of ray florets and number of disc florets of Helianthus annuus L.
Similarly all bacterial strains caused increase in number of disc florets of flowers in treated plants in comparison to the non-inoculated control treatment except the Kushneria avicenniae (AHT) which caused reduction in the number of disc florets.
Also maximum increase in the number of disc florets was observed in Arthrobacter mysorens (AHA) by 51.8% over non-inoculated control treatment (Table 2).
Ray florets comprise the outer ring of often brightly coloured 'petals', while disc florets form the centre of the flower head.
To confuse matters, some have only disc florets - the burdock, or 'sticky bobs' as we used to call them, have only disc florets whereas the dandelion and its ilk have only ray florets.
They have floral heads like the sunflower and are typically 1 to 6 centimeters in diameter including both ray florets and disc florets
. Flowers have a pungent and musky odor which deter insect pests and nematodes.
The most common sunflower phenotype is a composite flower head that contains a single whorl of large, flattened, yellow ray florets on the outer perimeter and hundreds to over a thousand individual, tubular, disc florets that can produce seeds.
The double-flowered mutants that van Gogh depicted in many of his paintings, on the other hand, have multiple bands of yellow florets and a much smaller proportion of internal disc florets.
Mature, fully developed disc florets (al least 3 florets per specimen) were selected for analysis.
Disc florets were dehydrated in a graded series of ethanol and criticalpoint-dried (BAL-TEC CPD 030) with liquid C[O.sub.2].
