AFISHERMAN who illegally set a drift net
in a conservation area and overstated his catches to the Environment Agency by more than PS17,000 worth of fish is now relying on benefits after losing his licence.

. In order to clarify several existing regulations, the Commission, on 19 September, published a proposal for a standard definition of what is a drift net
, which it plans will be inserted into relevant EU legislation, including existing laws.
It could be the first signs that the stocking of the river with spring fish coupled with the end of the North East drift net
fishery is beginning to pay off.
The Baltic Sea was reportedly exempted from this decision then with the argument that drift net
fisheries did not cause ecological damage, but the EU on Monday (22 March) decided to phase out the use of drift nets
over a four-year period in the Baltic Sea as well.
The Journal recently reported how the Environment Agency had confirmed a new order which will see the closure of the drift net
fishery of salmon and trout in the North East by 2022, and phase out the traditional T and J net beach fishery.
In a proposal adopted on 19 September, the definition is proposed that "drift net
means any gillnet held on the sea surface or at a certain distance below it by floating devices, drifting with the current either independently or with the boat to which it may be attached.
It is hard to believe that not only is drift net
fishing permitted but the Government continues to approve increased quotas for salmon.
THE GOVERNMENT is being urged to justify an "irrational" decision to end the region's traditional salmon drift net
fishery by 2022.
