Although there are variations in the group of species of scale insects associated with citrus plants in different parts of the world, the most common species in Sao Paulo and the other citrus-producing areas in Brazil are those belonging to the family Diaspididae. Their predominance may be due to the difficulty of controlling them with insecticides, because in the second instar these insects begin to produce a waxy cover that protects them from contact with insecticidal sprays (Miller & Davidson 2005).
Of these, Aspidiotus destructor or coconut scale insects in the family Diaspididae were reported to be the most serious pest (Mohyuddin, 1981).
