When gastrulated embryos and non-developing eggs from one capsule were maintained outside the capsule, gastrulated embryos developed into veligers, and the non-developing embryos did not continue development, which indicated that continuing conditions in the capsule were not required to enforce non-development of most eggs.
Transplantation of previously decapsulated gastrulated embryos yields a survival and growth rate similar to that of control embryos, suggesting that experimental manipulations and decapsulation of gastrulated embryos do not permanently hinder embryonic development.
