MacDonald is a Toronto based artist whose work explores themes of gender and power dynamics through the lens of
genre painting. MacDonald graduated from OCADU in 2013 with a BFA in Drawing and Painting.
Though he had learned the tradition of Korean ink painting, Baik blazed a trail in a unique style of
genre painting capturing the lives of men at the time.
After Rembrandt and Vermeer, the wider subject of the exhibit is 'Fijnschilderij,' or 'fine painting.' This was Dutch
genre painting that emerged in the first half of the 17th century consisting of portraiture and depictions of everyday life.
They use the tropes of landscape
genre painting as a method for critically exploring and questioning the mediated environment that make up our everyday life.
They used a traditional and realistic style of
genre painting to capture the ambience of these exotic places, remaining unaffected by the modern artistic movements of the time.
The exhibition "traces two main narratives -- Rembrandt's development as an artist, as seen through The Leiden Collection's 15 works by the artist, and the development of
genre painting in 17th-century Holland, as shown through The Leiden Collection's extraordinary depth of works by the fijnschilders (fine painters)," Yeager-Crasselt said in a released statement.
The picture, though, is a curious mix of
genre painting and portraiture: there's something non-conventional and specific about the slight challenge in her stare and the turn of her mouth, as if the strength of her character (Gainsborough used to call her 'the captain') is coming out around the edges.
Sheila McTighe, senior lecturer at the Courtauld Institute of Art, stated that Campi "is best known for his significant contribution to the birth of northern Italian
genre painting. The style appeared quite suddenly between 1580 and 1585 in Cremona and Bologna, and its development was heavily influenced by similar
genre paintings by Flemish artists Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer." Wealthy merchants and bankers--some of whom were no doubt the subjects of Campi's portraiture--imported examples of those Flemish
genre paintings to northern Italy, and Campi would have had ready access to them.
