It represents a molecularly defined clade (Murphy et al., 1999; Hrbek and Larson, 1999; Hrbek et al., 2004; Suijker and Collier, 2006) within a large, diverse assemblage of species (formerly assigned to the genus Rivulus) that are distributed throughout Northwestern South America; central and eastern Brazilian Amazon; river basins of Guianas; upper Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia; Rio Negro basin in Brazil; and lower Peruvian Amazon.
