forward and backward it is called as ginglymoid joint. However, at the same time it also provides gliding movement which classifies it as an arthrodial joint so known as ginglymoarthrodial joint.
Each joint is composed of condyle of the mandible, an articulating disc and an articular fossa of the temporal bone.1 The TMJ provides hinging movement in one plane and therefore can be considered a ginglymoid joint. However, it also provides for gliding movements, which classifies it as an arthrodial joint.
The movement of this joint is quite complex as it allows hinging movement in one plane (a ginglymoid joint) and at the same time allows gliding movements (an arthrodial joint) in another plane.
