Significant mineral occurrences in the country's non-igneous and non-metamorphic rocks are uncommon, although beautiful celestine specimens come from sedimentary rocks (marls) near Majunga, and well-crystallized zeolites such as gmelinite, analcime and chabazite were found in volcanic rocks at some historical localities (Lacroix, 1922-23; Behier, 1960).
Short mineralogical notes on natrolite, thomsonite, phillipsite, gismondine and analcime assemblages were presented by Muhlstein and Fengl (1977), gmelinite by Barta and Rychly (1979) and Rychly et al.
At Two Islands, the larger island is entirely basalt and has common gmelinite and analcime.

In February 1890 Niven received "one of the best lots of minerals from Nova Scotia I have ever seen, comprising chabazite, gmelinite, analcite, stilbite and heulandite," and also offered for sale an intriguing specimen: "the finest, largest and best rhodonite specimen that doubtless has ever been found," priced very high (for the times) at $500.

Relationship to other species: It is a member of the zeolite group and the K-dominant member of the gmelinite series.
Crystal-lined cavities contain albite, nabesite, gmelinite, neptunite, analcime, gonnardite, lovdarite, an unidentified phase presumed to be trona and possibly opal.
The gorgeous calcites, plus fine specimens of silver minerals, come from the underground Sarbaiski mine, w hich chiefly exploits iron ore (magnetite); the Sokolovski quarry yields good specimens of gmelinite, natrolite, and other zeolite species.
Associated minerals are: aegirine, albite, analcime, ancylite-(Ce), calcite, catapleiite, dawsonite, donnayite-(Y), elpidite, epididymite, eudialyte, eudidymite, fluorite, franconite, gaidonnayite, galena, genthelvite, gmelinite, gonnardite, horvathie-(Y), kupletskite, leifite, microcline, molybdenite, narsarsukite, natrolite, nenadkevichite, petersenite-(Ce), polylithionite, pyrochlore, quartz, rhodochrosite, rutile, sabinaite, serandite, siderite, sphalerite, thomasclarkite-(Y), zircon and an unidentified Na-REE-carbonate (UK91).

In a dozen or so winsome thumbnails and small miniatures, the natrolite makes brightly sparkling radial tufts of tiny acicular crystals, the tufts to 2 cm across, implanted singly or in little grapebunches on a weathered gray rock, with sharp, tan, 2-mm chabazite and/or gmelinite rhombohedrons for garnish.
