These polymers demonstrate similar mechanical properties and chemical resistance to polyurethanes, yet do not contain harmful isocyanates. The polymers can be synthesized in a variety of polar and aromatic solvents to provide low viscosity solutions, thus allowing for the generation of topcoats that are free of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
"From application and drying, to physical properties and finished appearance, this product will be well suited to customers who do not or cannot use isocyanates in their process," said David Calabra, global product director, Sherwin-Williams Product Finishes.
The product, which helps make floor and wall coatings more adhesive and durable, is a substitute for conventional polyurethanes that are manufactured with toxic isocyanates, which can cause respiratory problems, Industrial Finishes said in a statement.
