From the observations, the magnetic field in the bridge is 0.3 microgauss, a millionth as strong as the field we experience on our planet's surface, the astronomers report in the May Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
"Voyager data show that the Fluff is much more strongly magnetized than anyone had previously suspected - between 4 and 5 microgauss," said Merav Opher, a NASA Heliophysics Guest Investigator from George Mason University.
The scientists found to their surprise that the cluster's dilute intergalactic gas had magnetic fields of 2 to 3 microgauss ([micro]G), similar in strength to those in the Milky Way.
