Although comparatively rare, microstomatous and astomatous fishes have been observed for over a century (Leidy 1875; Dawson & Heal 1976).
Prior to this report only two other buffalo with oral atresia were documented in scientific literature: a microstomatous specimen, approximately 380 mm TL, from the Ouachita River, Arkansas (Leidy 1875) and an astomatous specimen, 536 mm TL, from Moon Lake, Mississippi (Fuller 1951).
