Gary Duggan's Monged, first staged at the Project Arts Centre in the Irish capital's trendy Temple Bar district in 2005, is about three young Dubliners getting off their faces on a cocktail of drink and drugs over a weekend.
Monged proved a big hit in Dublin and is now having its UK premiere at the Belgrade Theatre's new second space, B2.
I let him know about Monged and sent him a script at the time.
Bearing in mind the Irish tradition of self-destruction through alcohol, supplemented in this play by ecstasy and cocaine, you wonder whether Monged might be a celebration of a binge culture which is possibly identified with Temple Bar but not entirely unknown to cetain sections of Birmingham city centre.
Monged is at B2, Belrade Theatre, Coventry until December 1 (Box office: 024 7655 3055).
