Twelve Aerojet Rocketdyne MR-106H monopropellant
(hydrazine) thrusters packaged in four modules on the Delta IV upper stage provide roll, pitch and yaw control as well as propellant settling burns.
The mission will demonstrate the practical capabilities of AF-M315E, a Hydroxyl Ammonium Nitrate fuel and oxidizer monopropellant
developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory.
(18) In each of these individual tanks was a variance of either helium pressurant and nitrogen for coolant or hydrazine monopropellant
Bloodhound will now carry a monopropellant
rocket (which injects high test peroxide, or HTP, through a catalyst to produce superheated steam) rather than a single hybrid motor (which features a secondary solid fuel embedded into the rocket tube which is burnt by the steam).
Aerojet Rocketdyne also provided 18 monopropellant
hydrazine thrusters on the GEO Flight 3 satellite, 12 MR-103G 0.2-lbf thrusters and six MR-106L 5-lbf thrusters.
Aerojet Rocketdyne propulsion aboard the Atlas V included an RL10A-4-2 upper-stage engine that provided 22,300 lbf thrust; five solid rocket boosters that offered an average of 250,000 lbf of thrust each; eight retro-rockets for the Centaur separation from the Atlas common core booster; and 12 MR-106 monopropellant
hydrazine thrusters on the Atlas V Centaur upper stage that provided roll, pitch and yaw control, as well as settling burns for the upper-stage main engines.
SSTL has identified HTP as an environmentally-friendly monopropellant
with the potential for providing the high performance required for future small satellite missions and has teamed with partners on a project to bring the new HTP propulsion system design to flight-ready status.
"GPIM is the key mission to demonstrate a green monopropellant
alternative to hydrazine," said Jim Oschmann, vice president and general manager of Civil Space and Technology at Ball Aerospace.
The nifty little probe, powered by hydrazine monopropellant
and 16 thrusters engineered to transport it all the way across the solar system, wasn't to be deterred.

for small satellites," in Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Green Propellants for Space Propulsion (ESA SP-557'04), A.
Aerojet has reportedly provided monopropellant
hydrazine thrusters for every GPS satellite launched to date as well as complete propulsion systems for Boeing's GPS IIF.
Additionally, Cyclone is developing a larger engine able to run on a specialized monopropellant
called Moden fuel, capable of combusting underwater or in outer space in the absence of oxygen, for defense contractor Raytheon.
