A new theory put forth by two researchers from the University of Cambridge attempts to do exactly that, by predicting the existence of a naked singularity in four dimensions.
When this extraordinary novel appeared in Australia last April, one reviewer grouped it with "postmodernist maximalist opuses such as Infinite Jest, The Recognitions, 2666, A Naked Singularity and Gravity's Rainbow.
This past summer, I read all 690 pages of A Naked Singularity (University of Chicago Press, 2012) in two days, the way that tens of thousands of Americans watched a whole season of Breaking Bad or Orange Is the New Black on Netflix.
Our description of photons, for instance, may be undermined because those photons may have interacted with a naked singularity while zipping across the universe.
Within this black hole is the naked singularity at the coordinate radius r = 0 where the black-hole mass is assumed to reside--hiding this singularity is the event-horizon sphere with the Schwarzschild radius.
Rather, such a failure would correspond to a much more radical absence of any nomic correlations about, say, what could emerge from a naked singularity.
A naked singularity would be a singularity bereft of a concealing black-hole shell, and therefore visible, in principle, to outside observers.
But a view of such a process may be forever barred from our own inquiring eyes, in spite of the intense theoretical search for an unadorned, naked singularity, unobscured by a lightless event horizon.
On the other hand, a naked singularity, if such a thing exists, would be an abrupt hole in the fabric of reality - one that would not just distort space-time, but would also wreak havoc on the laws of physics wherever it goes and lead to a catastrophic loss of predictability.
But all the same, in its ambition and shortcomings and shaggy glory, A Naked Singularity is perhaps most reminiscent of The Broom of the System.
