A phonon arising in crystal lattice structures that have more than one atom per lattice point and are typically easily excited by light.

Hence, nine vibrations can be predicted at the zone-center optical phonon modes as follows: 2[A.sub.1] + 1[A.sub.2] + 1[B.sub.1] + 1[B.sub.2] + 2[E.sub.1] + 2[E.sub.2], where six modes at the zone center 2[A.sub.1] + 2[E.sub.1] + 2[E.sub.2] are active in the Raman spectra [28, 29].
There are three types of light scattering in optical fiber: Rayleigh scattering caused by the change of fiber refractive index, Raman scattering induced by optical phonon, and Brillouin scattering produced by acoustic phonon [27].
The size of Ge NCs (R) annealed at various temperatures can be roughly estimated from the shift between [[omega].sub.1] and [[omega].sub.LO-TO] using the bending parameters of bulk optical phonon dispersion curve [[beta].sub.LO-TO], according to the formula [[omega].sup.2.sub.1] = [[omega].sup.2.sub.LO-TO]-[[beta].sub.LO-TO][([pi]/R).sup.2], where [[omega].sub.1] and [[omega].sub.LO-TO] are the Raman spectra of Ge NCs films and bulk Ge, respectively [20].
Since a DPP is a state in which a DP is coupled with a phonon in the material, the EL spectrum of the Si-LED described above has a large number of sidebands that are regularly arranged with a spacing corresponding to the optical phonon energy, centered on the photon energy of the light used in the DPP-assisted annealing.
Thus, from Figure 2 we can see that Raman spectrum of the structure of homoepitaxial GaAs/GaAs (100) (sample EM2350) contains high intensity longitudinal optical phonon LO(T) localized ~293[cm.sup.-1].

High precision experiments show that sudden changes in electron dispersion curves (kinks) occur from electronic coupling to optical phonon modes, like half-breathing oxygen modes [5].
