The higher concentration of Zr and Cr is due to the presence of zircon and picotite. The sandstones of the Khojak Formation are highly depleted in Ba (UCC: 550) and Sr (UCC: 350).
When the chromic content in chromitite is 10% or less, the rock is a chrome-rich variety of common spinel (magnesium aluminate) called picotite. Both chromite and picotite are similar in colour and can be difficult to distinguish, analysis.
Although ultrabasic material is not very common in the sandstone and conglomerate of the Ispikan and Panjgur formations, occasional grains of chrome spinel (picotite) and serpentinite suggest derivation from the ophiolitic belts.
