The new research, published in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science, suggests that Earth's atmosphere is a better shield from meteoroids than previously thought.

ExtremeTech reports that the proposal was made during a NASA talk at the recently concluded Planetary Science Vision 2050 Workshop.
"The way that terrestrial bodies like Mercury, Earth and even the moon have evolved thermally is emerging as one of the puzzles that researchers need to solve in planetary science," Watters said.
Even if they are approved and funded, a long hiatus in what has been the rapidly advancing field of planetary science is about to begin.
"We now know Mars was once a planet very much like Earth with warm salty seas and fresh water lakes," Planetary Science Director at NASA Jim Green said at a news conference.
Odyssey, which discovered widespread water ice just beneath the surface of the Red Planet, is still going strong today, serving as a key communications relay for NASA's Mars rovers and making continued contributions to planetary science.
"This interdisciplinary endeavor connects top research teams and provides a synthesized approach in the search for planets with the greatest potential for signs of life," said Jim Green, NASA's Director of Planetary Science. "The hunt for exoplanets is not only a priority for astronomers, it's of keen interest to planetary and climate scientists as well."
