Pertinent Data: The plug gauge itself is designed for a given bore size and shape and can be modified to accommodate harsh testing conditions.
For example, when measuring a bore, a two-point diameter as measured with a micrometer, [3] a least-squares fit diameter as measured with a coordinate measuring machine, [4] and a maximum inscribed diameter as found using a plug gauge, will each yield a different numerical value because each measurement method realizes a different quantity permitted by the poorly defined measurand.
A plug gauge is too expensive for casual use and will not be discussed here.
Caption: Plug gauges are used to measure revolver chamber mouths.
All measurements can be taken with automotive-type spark plug gauges or similar with the cylinder closed.
