The European Parliament has reached a rapprochement to the European Council's views in the debate over the abrogation of the community regulation stipulating the prepackaging format for some 60 products (liquids or solids) such as cacao, bread and flour.
The Council introduced transitional periods, ie the national prepackaging format for milk, butter, coffee, dry pasta and rice could be maintained for five years after the effective date of the directive; and six years for white sugar.
THERE are indications that the European Parliament may give into pressure from the European Commission and the European Union (EU) Council of Ministers and accept close-to-maximum liberalisation of EU prepackaging size restrictions.
The new directive will replace directives 75/106/EEC and 80/232 EEC, as well as national legislation in the member states on nominal quantities for prepackaged products (prepackaging formats).
