Release date- 15082019 - New research by a University of Bristol palaeontology post-graduate student has revealed fresh insights into how the braincase of the dinosaur Psittacosaurus developed and how this tells us about its posture.
"Before this study," says Morschhauser, "we had to rely on Psittacosaurus, a more distantly related and unusual ceratopsian, for our picture of what the last bipedal ceratopsian looked like."
Psittacosaurus, a speckled dinosaur about the size of a golden retriever, had a camouflaging pattern that may have helped it hide in forests, Jakob Vinther and colleagues say.
By recreating the color patterns of a small Psittacosaurus, they also determined its likely habitat - dense forests.
Psittacosaurus was mainly brown but with a paler underside of the tail and belly, a pattern called countershading that may have helped the 1.5-metrebipedal plant-eater go unnoticed by hungry predators, the scientists said on Thursday.
The skeleton was later identified as belonging to a Psittacosaurus.
A new analysis of dinosaur fossils by University of Pennsylvania researchers has revealed that a number of specimens of the genus Psittacosaurus - once believed to represent three different species - are all members of a single species.
"Dinosaurs" also features a new full-size cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex in a dynamic pose and numerous recently discovered fossils of prehistoric animals, including Gorgosaurus, Psittacosaurus, Protoceratops, and many other specimens from around the world.
In China, scientists recently discovered a 125-million-year-old fossil of a Psittacosaurus (SIT-uh-ko-SAWR-us) dinosaur, surrounded by the remains of 34 young dinos.
The announcement came after a 4ft Psittacosaurus, which has a massive parrot-like beak, was found surrounded by 34 juveniles in Mongolia.
The skeleton of the psittacosaurus sin ensis vanished from the Newcastle Regional Museum, 60 miles north of Sydney.
