In the first stage, a low-temperature catalytic treatment (270[degrees]C, 13.8 MPa, sulphided cobalt-molybdenum on aluminia) was used to convert unstable pyrolysate into a tar similar to the high-pressure liquefaction product.

A fourth potential problem, for optical methods that rely on "return to baseline" transmission to define a split point for thermal pyrolysis correction, could be differences in the effective attenuation coefficient for the initial EC and the absorbing pyrolysate. (It is not known whether such a possibility has been effectively ruled out for thermal-optical techniques.) Clearly, any OC that combusts beyond the presumed split point will mimic EC and lead to an inflat ed value of the latter.

The size of the graphen structures of the pyrolysate of the original pitch is very slightly smaller compared with the pyrolysates of pitch with additions of BCMA, as can be seen from the [L.sub.a] values.
But when the high-molecular thermobitumen (TB) was extracted from the cubic residue after retorting or from the total pyrolysate obtained in autoclaves, the total yield of the liquid product, stating the sum of thermobitumen and oil (TBO), exceeded 80% of OM.
