Iron was increased with decreased siderocytes and sideroblasts in 47 (82.4%) patients, absent in 6 (10.5%) and present in 4 (7.0%) patients.
Siderocytes had been noted on prior blood film examinations but it was not until this time that alcoholism was suggested as a cause, and that sideroblastic anaemia could be present in this patient.
