The small-eared ground squirrels are a group of western ground squirrels in the genus Spermophilus, subgenus Spermophilus that have smaller body size, reduced external ear pinnae, and generally occur in drier shrub-steppe habitats.
Large-eared species were marked with a small metallic ear tag, and small-eared species were toe-clipped for later identification.
Consequently, we constructed a database of 250 records of small-eared ground squirrels from specimen records in the Albertson College Museum of Natural History, Boise State University, Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (University of California, Berkeley), Utah Museum of Natural History, National Museum of Natural History, University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, Texas Cooperative Wildlife Collection, and University of Kansas.
