1. A form of air pollution produced when sunlight reacts with hydrocarbons and nitrogen compounds released into the atmosphere, especially from automobile exhaust. Smog is common in many large cities, especially during hot, sunny weather. It appears as a brownish haze and can irritate the eyes and lungs.
2. Fog that has become polluted with smoke, especially smoke from burning coal.
