There's been some incredibly rare birds seen on the reserve (often county firsts) including squacco
heron, black-winged prattincole and more recently a little bittern, a species which had not been seen locally for more than 150 years.
However, all other species (Grey Herons, Great White Herons, Little Egrets and Squacco
Herons) seemed to be much dependent on marshes and rivers.
It said the most exciting observations of the weekend were a White wagtail observed at Paphos Plain, a Leucistic Barn Swallow observed at Akrotiri Peninsula, in Limassol and a Squacco
Heron in Athalassa Park, in Nicosia.

A RARE Squacco
Heron from southern Europe has decided to make itself at home in the Norfolk Broads.
These large bodies of water provide ideal breeding spaces for cormorants (Phalacrocorax), squacco
herons (Ardeola ralloides), and little egrets (Egretta garzetta).
