In contrast, the nitroolefin bearing phenyl, tolyl, and 4-chlorophenyl, afforded the corresponding Michael products in excellent yield (97%) (Table 2, entries 1, 2 and 4), while in the case of nitroolefin with 4-methoxyphenyl, the yield was slightly lower (84%) (Table 2, entry 3), which was probably attributed to the steric effect of the 4-methoxyphenyl group.
