As TARDEC prepares to oversee the new future tactical truck system
(FTTS) for the Army, there is a growing consensus that vehicles will need to be designed with the proper axle-loading weight and cab designs that can accommodate armor from the get-go, Carie said.
Having pioneered pneumatic plastic manifolds in the early 1990s, technology and industry acceptance have allowed us to progress into plastic composite fittings for all areas of the truck system
. Traditional-style fittings have also been replaced with integrated push-in cartridges, reducing the overall profile of the assembly, the number of components required, the potential of leak points, and resulting in easier assembly.
A $41 million five-year research and development program, called the Future Tactical Truck System
, is expected to pave the way for a new generation of vehicles.
The upcoming Future Tactical Truck System
(FTTS) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration will pursue motor, generator, energy storage and power control technologies.
"We've begun working with the body builders and getting into the technology of integrating electronics into a work truck system
and how the features we tout are actually applicable to a segment that would use a different set than our traditional customers, the truckload carriers.
"Our trucks can't handle what they are being asked to do," said Nance Halle, who runs an Army program called Future Tactical Truck System
. The FTTS is a five-year $42 million project to develop a replacement for the current light, medium and heavy trucks.
The Army will need to continue to upgrade existing trucks, until they can be replaced by the next-generation vehicle, the Future Tactical Truck System
, said Groller.
Alongside the FCS, the Army also is looking to field the Future Tactical Truck System
. Through the FTTS, the service plans to consolidate its various lines of tactical trucks into a single family of vehicles.
Under a program called the Future Tactical Truck System
, the Army will develop a multimode modular cargo vehicle, which will have two variants: a larger "maneuver sustainment" truck that will replace the current heavy and medium fleets, and a "utility" version that is the equivalent of a light truck.
A fully automated payment process between an electric charging point and a Daimler truck system
has taken place.
Although it has been less than half a year since the introduction of the truck system
, the business has no clarity about the tariffs and the ways in which it will operate.
