Flamengo arrived in Dubai for their first-ever competition after a fire had claimed the lives of 10 teenage players at the club's youth team's Ninho de Urubu
training centre in Rio de Janeiro in February.
It's known in Portuguese as urubu
d'agua: "water vulture." If there had once been a dolphin, it was now inside the stomachs of these wriggling fish.
The fire, which also left three teenagers injured, occurred while youth players slept in a dormitory inside the Ninho do Urubu
complex in Rio de Janeiro's western neighbourhood of Vargem Grande.
Rio de Janeiro's city hall said in a statement that Flamengo was fined 31 times because of infractions at the Ninho do Urubu
training ground, which had to be closed in October 2017.
Crews were called just after 5am yesterday to the Ninho de Urubu
training ground of the Flamengo club in western Rio de Janeiro, a fire official said.
Firefighters said they arrived at the Ninho do Urubu
, a state-of-the-art training center that was expanded and opened only two months ago, shortly after 5 a.m.
The fire brigade said in a statement that the training center was in the process of being brought into line with (fire) regulations" and that it did not yet have their certificate of approval.Of the 10 teenagers who died, only three were from the state of Rio de Janeiro, where the Ninho de Urubu
(the Nest of the Vulture after the club's nickname) training centre is located.
