The researchers found that, for every 500 MET-mins/week increase in physical activity from being totally sedentary, the risk of death was reduced by 14% in people with
CVD and 7% in those without it.
European guidelines on the prevention of
CVD do not recommend aspirin for individuals free from
CVD due to the increased risk of major bleeding.(2) This advice was subsequently supported by results in moderate risk patients (ARRIVE),(3) diabetic patients (ASCEND),(4) and in people over 70 (ASPREE) which demonstrated that modest reductions in
CVD risk were outweighed by the increased bleeding hazard.(5)
Compared to people without
CVD who did the most exercise, the increased risk was 87 per cent and 45 per cent for people with
CVD who had a totally sedentary lifestyle and for those who did 0-499 MET-mins/week, respectively.
This trial involved 8,179 patients with

Lopez, Ph.D., and Tim Adair, Ph.D., from the University of Melbourne in Australia, used vital statistics since 2000 for 23 high-income countries to examine age-standardized
CVD death rates by sex for all ages.
There are nearly 1.5 million such
CVD events in the UK each year.
Previous randomized trials haven't raised much concern, but they included prior users who may have developed patients with baseline
CVD.
But European guidelines released in 2016 stated that the drug is not recommended for primary prevention, and the US also imposed stricter regulations in administering aspirin to individuals that are at high-risk for
CVD. This means that those who do not have any
CVD are not advised to take aspirin as a preventive measure as it can increase the risk of bleeding.
