Similarity between the aseasonal, humid paramo climate and the mild oceanic climate of the south temperate zone has allowed establishment of these southern elements in the equatorial Andes (Cleef, 1978; Simpson & Todzia, 1990).
In the photo in the middle of the next page, which I shot on November 24, 2004, notice the difference between the whiter South Tropical Zone and the bluer South Temperate Zone. The wide, dark South Equatorial Belt (SEB) is subdivided into smaller bands that show a definite variation in color.
We moderns, however, know that the Sun is always in the northern half of the sky when seen from the South Temperate Zone. The Phoenicians would not have made up such an apparently ridiculous story if they had not actually witnessed it, so the very item that caused Herodotus to doubt the story convinces us that it must be true.
All the impacts will occur at nearly the same Jovian latitude, 43 [degrees] to 45 [degrees] south in the vicinity of the South South Temperate Zone. Veteran Jupiter observers are familiar with the usual appearance of this rather bland region.
