These Kaolians are most noble fighters, nor are the green men of the equator one whit less warlike than their cold, cruel cousins of the
temperate zone. There were many times when either side might have withdrawn without dishonor and thus ended hostilities, but from the mad abandon with which each invariably renewed hostilities I soon came to believe that what need not have been more than a trifling skirmish would end only with the complete extermination of one force or the other.
The hard soil and four months of snow make the inhabitant of the northern
temperate zone wiser and abler than his fellow who enjoys the fixed smile of the tropics.
The middle region of our being is the
temperate zone. We may climb into the thin and cold realm of pure geometry and lifeless science, or sink into that of sensation.
Its air is much more attenuated than ours, its oceans have shrunk until they cover but a third of its surface, and as its slow seasons change huge snowcaps gather and melt about either pole and periodically inundate its
temperate zones. That last stage of exhaustion, which to us is still incredibly remote, has become a present- day problem for the inhabitants of Mars.
During this day I was particularly struck with a remark of Humboldt's, who often alludes to "the thin vapour which, without changing the transparency of the air, renders its tints more harmonious, and softens its effects." This is an appearance which I have never observed in the
temperate zones. The atmosphere, seen through a short space of half or three-quarters of a mile, was perfectly lucid, but at a greater distance all colours were blended into a most beautiful haze, of a pale French grey, mingled with a little blue.
Then came the rain--not as it comes to us of the
temperate zones, but as a mighty avalanche of water--a deluge which spills tons instead of drops upon the bending forest giants and the terrified creatures which haunt their shade.
This is the first study to show that the persistence of relatively warm, dry and rainy summer periods would increase in the
temperate zone of the northern hemisphere if global temperatures rise by 1.5-degreeC and 2-degreeC above preindustrial levels, compared with today's climate.
So the borders will start slamming shut in the countries, mostly in the
temperate zone of the planet...
Currently, Sakura is widely distributed in Japan and other countries in the
temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere such as Taiwan, Korea, Mainland China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Thailand and West Siberia.
Habitat: An erect perennial member of the Guttiferae family growing to 80cm in light, well-drained soil throughout the
temperate zone. The stem displays pairs of balsamic scented leaves which are perforated and topped by clusters of bright yellow flowers.
Those are still in the
temperate zone but they will be worth watching.
Nor does it mean that Huddersfield will suddenly move from the
temperate zone to a broiling desert or freezing arctic climate.
