Smooth-surfaced gourds with long necks, such as 'Golden
Cushaw' winter squash or a fully mature crookneck squash (typically grown as a summer squash), make lightweight darning tools--and you could grow enough in a single season to have a gourd for every pair of socks you darn!
(2013) reported that 'Shelper' rootstock provided 31.2 and 43.2% increase in the number of marketable fruits and 35.5% and 39.5% increases in yield, compared to non-grafted plants and cucumber grafted onto Green-stripped
cushaw squash rootstock respectively.
Among the 30-odd plants are the longhandled dipper gourd, the white
cushaw and the West India burr gherkin.

Even the foods sound sensual: mirliton,

Your January/February 2017 issue had an article on
Cushaw squash by Kenny Coogan of Florida and it got me interested in growing this squash this year.
These are the
cushaws, or cashaws, and are represented by varieties such as GreenStriped, Tennessee Sweet Potato, Golden
Cushaw and forms of White
Cushaw.
Cushaw squash produce big, bulb-shaped fruits with dense, sweet flesh.
The squashes turned out to be green-striped
cushaw (Cucurbita mixta), which MJ happily ate and shared raw, cooked, boiled and stewed.
I have a question: What is a
cushaw? Are they grown in gardens, and would a local farmers' market have a supply?
In November, the basement is full of butternut squash, sweet potatoes, white potatoes and
cushaw squash.
All sub-species, such as butternut,
cushaw, hubbard and zucchini fall within those five.
