The North American rodent genus Perognathus occupies the western one-half of North America stretching from Canada to central Mexico (Schmidly et al., 1993) and currently consists of nine species (Patton, 2005) split into four species groups: the fasciatus group, the flavus group, the longimembris group, and the parvus group (Osgood, 1900; Williams, 1978).
