The bony fish and cartilaginous fish prey of the white shark includes a variety of sizes from small to large, and includes pelagic, demersal and benthic species, such as anchovies (family Engraulidae), hakes (genus Merluccius), barracudas (family Sphyraenidae), tuna (genus Thunnus), scorpionfish (genua Scorpaena), swordfish (Xiphias gladius), stingrays (genus Dasyatis), and many others.
The smallest individuals (<3.2 mm SL) of the genus Thunnus could not be identified to species, and are referred to as Thunnus spp.
Larvae of the genus Thunnus were sorted from other scombrid larvae by the morphological features and meristics described in Nishikawa and Rimmer (1987) and Ambrose (1996).
Because all tuna species of the genus Thunnus are thought to be phylogenetically new (Chow and Kishino, 1995), use of highly variable genetic markers may be necessary to investigate genetic differentiation between stocks.
