There are few explicit connections between his original compositions and his versions of the Foster melodies, but there is more than a hint of Americana in the melodic framework of such pieces as "Journey Cake" and "Fits and Starts." With the Foster material, Biskin's general approach is to take the familiar melody and reset it in a more emotionally fraught harmonic context: the tricky chord changes he places behind "Hard Times Come Again No More" and "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" are notable examples of this approach, whereas on "Beautiful Dreamer" he fractures the melody itself and creates unusual counterpoint lines for it as well.
