Lin said that patients often to not present any obvious symptoms, but those that do will experience headaches, fever,
aseptic meningitis, general malaise, altered level of consciousness, disorientation, brain damage, paralysis, and even coma or death.
Table 4 suggest Mean CSF ADA levels in tuberculous meningitis groups is significantly higher as compared to pyogenic meningitis group,
aseptic meningitis group and control groups.
Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) has emerged as an etiologic agent of
aseptic meningitis, encephalitis, encephalomyelitis, acute flaccid paralysis, and other severe systemic disorders, including neurogenic pulmonary edema, and cardiopulmonary failure (2).
Karsen et al reported that mean CSF ADA levels in tuberculous were 28.34 +- 14.83 IU/L, 8.71 +- 5.83 IU/L in neurobrucellosis, 6.18 +- 2.54 IU/L in purulent meningitis and 3.43 +- 3.48 U/L in
aseptic meningitis, when cut off value of ADA levels were kept at 12.357.
The spectrum includes
aseptic meningitis and brainstem encephalitis.
The patients with
aseptic meningitis may present with a predominance of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in the CSF during the first 24 hours of illness, thus making difficult to distinguish
aseptic meningitis from bacterial meningitis.
Common manifestations include a febrile illness with lesions on the palms, soles, oral mucous membranes, or perineum; and
aseptic meningitis. Severe CNS EV-A71 infection can cause brainstem encephalitis leading to cardiopulmonary collapse and polio-like AFM (4).
"The impact of herpes zoster infection on the central nervous system can be significant, including cranial nerve palsy, encephalitis, encephalopathy, and
aseptic meningitis. Patients can have long lasting residual neurologic deficits from this at six months or longer despite appropriate treatment.
Neuropsychiatric JSLE consisted of 19 syndromes which were used to verify the clinical manifestations in our patients including,
aseptic meningitis, cerebrovascular disease (CVD), demyelinating syndrome (e.g., multiple sclerosis), headache, movement disorder, myelopathy, seizure disorder, acute confusional state, anxiety disorder, cognitive dysfunction, mood disorder, psychosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, autonomic neuropathy, mononeuropathy (single/multiplex), myasthenia gravis, cranial neuropathy, plexopathy, and polyneuropathy.
More rarely,
aseptic meningitis, meningoencephalitis, stroke, focal or generalized seizures, and cerebral aneurysms may develop [2].
