Washington, Oct 6 (ANI): Challenging popular theory about how part of our solar system formed, a University of Victoria PhD student has found evidence that the planet Neptune can't have knocked a collection of planetoids known as the Cold Classical Kuiper Belt to its current location at the edge of the solar system.
Most previously observed disks have been cool and lie much farther from their parent stars, in the region that corresponds in the solar system to the locale of Pluto and the reservoir of comets known as the Kuiper belt.
This object appeared in the Kuiper Belt, a region of space just beyond the planet Neptune (see SW 10/19/98).
This biography recounts the life and career of Dutch American astronomer Gerard Kuiper (1905-1973), who created a new discipline called planetary science.
