sock·eye salmon
(sŏk′ī′)n. A salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) of northern Pacific coastal waters, having a silvery body with a dark bluish back and small black speckles. Both sexes turn red before spawning. Also called blueback salmon, red salmon.
